Kaede is invited by her friend Risa to play a virtual reality MMORPG with her. If Kaede doesn't hate games, what she really doesn't like is being in pain.

She creates a character named Maple and decides to put all her points in Defense to minimize the pain. As a result she moves slowly, cannot use magic and even a simple rabbit can get the better of her. 

However, it turns out that she gains a skill known as "Absolute Defense", as well as a "Counter-Skill" that protects her from special moves. Its extreme constitution transforms it into a walking fortress, almost invulnerable, which the designers of the game had not really anticipated...
