In a small provincial Japanese town, a group of friends of six children is shattered when one of them, a little girl named Menma, dies in an accident.
Ten years later, the group, now teenagers, is still strongly affected by this tragedy. In particular Jinta Yadomi, who since that day has lived in seclusion and has even stopped going to school. Until one summer day, Menma appears before him, claiming that she will not find peace until her wish is granted. This element, which he thinks is the consequence of his trauma, will lead Jinta to reconnect with his old friends, thus confronting the different ways they have had to deal with their painful past.
